Velvet Crush :: Lush Vest and Faux Fur Vest

Filed Under: Fashion / Guest Bloggers / You Need This

Wendy from Wendy’s Lookbook styled a pair of our Martini in Sapphire Blue.  We came across her post and thought is was so great we wanted to share her tips with you.  While exploring San Francisco, she paired our leg lengthening Martini flare in velvet with a simple black turtleneck and faux fur vest.  We agree with Wendy that the Holidays are the perfect time to play with texture. Our velvet styles are perfect for incorporating color and texture into any wardrobe, and we love how Wendy experiments with adding in other textures. In such a cold climate the velvet pant was also perfect for her tour of the City by the Bay.

“San Francisco is absolutely breathtaking!  Every time I come back, it’s hard for me to leave!”

“These pants are very unique.  They’re velvet and perfect for the holidays!  The texture is lush, and the cut is leg lengthening.”

Do It Yourself: Halloween – Rosie the Riveter

Filed Under: Fashion / Guest Bloggers / Inspiration

Halloween is just around the corner – do you have a costume ready? With our own in office costume contest on Monday the office chatter has often involved our own costumes, including our lack of ideas. Then we saw What I Wore‘s DIY Halloween costume post and loved it so much we had to share it with our own ‘In The Pocket’ readers.

You’ll want the Bette in your favorite wash or a pair of your favorite high-waisted jeans. Gather your supplies, some delicious treats, and play your favorite Halloween tunes. Let’s get to work!

“When it comes to Halloween, why buy your costume if you could make it (or better yet, pull it out of your own closet!)?? All week long I’ll share my ideas for inexpensive, homemade Halloween costumes. Enjoy!

For my Rosie the Riveter costume, I looked no further than the iconic “We Can Do It” WWII era poster by J. Howard Miller (read more here). And this get up is was a freebie – I already had all of the pieces hanging in my closet.

Key Elements:

I love this costume because it’s probably something that most gals have ready to go in their closet.  I actually got the idea from one of my office mates who went as Rosie last year.  In addition to the three key elements, a vintage hair ‘do completes the look.  For mine, I teased my grown out bangs forward and then swooped them back and secured with bobby pins and hair spray. I secured the rest of my hair into a low pony tail and pined it upwards to lay smooth under the bandana. Polka dots are great, but any red scarf will do the trick. Finally, red lips aren’t a must, but I felt like they pulled everything together. Get ready to flex those biceps!

Cost: $0
Difficulty Level: Easy
Time Commitment: 30 minutes or less”

Fiona Byrne (of Naag.com) Breaks Down What Footwear Works With Various Denim Styles

Filed Under: Fashion / Guest Bloggers

The Naag editor-in-chief gives us her thoughts on which shoes to pair with some of her favorite Skinny Legs and Bell Bottoms for Fall…

Fiona Byrne of Naag.com

Fiona not only gives amazing advice on what fashionable footwear to pair with our favorite J Brand styles, but we also love her sources of inspiration and style tips!

Petite J Brand fans take note – she has special words of wisdom just for you.

“I like to think my shoe obsession is because I’m a Pisces but if I’m being honest it’s probably simply because I am a living, breathing female with a heartbeat. I’ve been wearing bell bottoms since the 90s and it’s always bothered me to see people wearing them too short so I decided to show you how I wear them and maybe you will like it.

I only recently started wearing the ankle-length skinny and I am loving their seamless chameleon-like quality of going from simple French chic to late night New York just by changing shoes.

Maria: High-Rise Legging

Maria

There’s nothing quite like a 30” inseam. This length is perfect for me as a shorty (I’m 5’4”). Here we are looking at a gorgeously smooth coated denim, with a perfect high waist, in a deep black. Now, let’s add those three things together and what do we get? An updated, hipper version of Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face, duh! My current favorite ballet flats are these newsprint ones from Pretty Ballerinas, and when you pair them with the downtown cool of the Maria jean, well, let’s just say I’ve kind of been wearing this combo non stop since temperatures got cool enough to wear long pants. It’s super ladylike with an edge.

811 Mid-Rise Skinny Leg

811 Mid-Rise Skinny Leg

I first got these in red earlier this year and what I like about them is the wash. It’s over-dyed so you can’t really tell they’re jeans which means with this Dynamite navy shade you can totally wear them to work or in my case, when I want to look semi-profesh. Here I put them with Burberry Fall 2011 wedges. It’s like these guys were fated to meet. Both are glamorous with a sporty edge, and both are the most comfortable things you can possibly imagine. Also another reason they work well with the wedge is because they are short enough to show some ankle, and that is necessary to avoid looking clunky as all get out.

Love Story

722 Love Story

So here’s the story with the Love Story. When I discovered this jean, I discovered heaven on earth. With an ultra wide waistband to give my fleshy hips some pull-in, then the 35” inseam. When you’re a titchbot like myself, you can fool people into thinking you’re tall as a supermodel by wearing a bell bottom that falls directly to half an inch above the ground. I love me a wedge but in this case, a platform is best because a flare will sit far better over a platform than a wedge. People who work a bell bottom too short really should be taken in front of a tribunal and told the brutal truth. It looks awful to have massive bells swinging wildly around your ankles. That’s just not how the universe intended it. Another tip – check the weather before you leave – those suckers get soaked in the rain, and wet ankles can ruin an otherwise fabulous evening.

Petite Love Story

Petite Love Story

It was like an imaginary prayer was answered when the Petite Love Story was introduced. This means we can now wear them with a more wearable heel during the day for long periods of time. In this case I paired them with Joie suede ankle boots. A modest heel, but it matters. This is kind of my homage to Milla Jovovich in Dazed & Confused. I’m pretty sure she wore hers at what I would consider too short but whatever, I wear them LONG!

Petite Love Story (Again)

Petite Love Story

Aaaaand another way to wear the Petite Love Story ! You may have heard this week that The Stone Roses are reforming? You know, only the most important British band of the past 30 years or so? Well, as a Stone Roses fans in the 90s, I wore a flare with a Converse or an Adidas Stan Smith trainer. This usually was accompanied by a parka jacket or an Adidas zip-up and some teeny-tiny ‘ringer’ T-shirt. So Brit pop and sooooo impractical – when your hem drags on the ground it obvs wears out super fast, so take a word of advice from someone who’s lived the 90s – make sure they stop half an inch above the ground. But like we said, they have to be worn as long as possible for the authentic Britpop vibe.”

Brooklyn Blonde takes the Jodhpur for a ride

Filed Under: Guest Bloggers / You Need This

Brooklyn Blonde styles Fall’s most-coveted style, the Jodhpur.

“As much as I love to get dressed up, I equally love a good pair of pants, but instead of sticking with basic jeans, I tend to lean towards unconventional styles: colored, patterned, or with fun details.

When J Brand asked me to style the Jodhpur, I jumped on the opportunity. I immediately fell in love with the modern riding look feel of them and the fact that they fit like a glove did not hurt. I wanted to style them in an outfit I’d wear to work or to a meeting and one that was a bit more weekend casual. Easily my new favorite fall and winter style, hands down!”

Life of a J Brand Marketing Intern PART II

Filed Under: Behind the Scenes / Guest Bloggers

I’m back and this time I’m here to share my summer abroad experience.

I was fortunate to be part of USC’s study abroad program called International Communication Studies. It’s different than any other study abroad program because instead of studying in a classroom, we visited various places such as London’s broadcast stations ‘Channel 4′ and ‘BBC’,  a meeting with the executives at ‘EuroDisney’ in Paris (they gave us free park passes for the day), an exclusive meeting with the Vatican Radio in Rome, a private tour of the Prague Castle, and the list goes on.

I was constantly on the go and tried to fit in as many shopping and sightseeing trips as much as possible. Although I was very busy, I made sure to be in style…yes I wore my J Brand summer essentials!

Because explaining my month-long trip may take more than 10 pages of this blog, here are some of my favorite moments from this trip!

Although it was raining most of the time, I was able to bring some Southern California sun with my 811 in Bright Royal! It was the perfect pair to walk across Abbey Road.

Versailles was one of my first sightseeing stops in Paris. The Garden was absolutely beautiful! I was taking my learning experiences from J Brand by doing some impromptu photo shoots throughout my trip! Here, I posed next to a piece of art with my favorite J Brand shorts: 1244 Gwen in Airwash!

I spent 4th of July in Rome! Before we went out to eat an American meal (although I insisted eating more pasta and pizza), my friends and I visited the Spanish steps. My wardrobe: Light grey H&M tee, electric blue sandals from Paris (on sale!), and of course the Perry shorts in Brick Red by J Brand!

My last stop was Prague, Czech Republic. Besides prepping for our class debate and studying for our oh-so wonderful final, one of the memorable moments in Prague was the exclusive private tour of the Prague Castle. I realized I probably will never have this experience in the future so I definitely cherished this moment. Here is my curtsy (please excuse the flip flops, my heels were killer)!

Now I am back and wrapping up my last year at USC! What’s next for the marketing intern? I came back from Europe with an open mind. I decided that I am young and no need to rush, so I am taking my time to figure what I want to do in the future. I am taking on different internships and also including J Brand into my schedule. I realized J Brand is my second home and I will never forget the life experiences learned during this internship. THANK YOU, J Brand!!

In the meantime, keep checking back In The Pocket for more insight on the J Brand staff!

Thank you for letting me share my story with you all!

Best,

Hye Young

Fall Colors with The Color Collective

Filed Under: Guest Bloggers / Inspiration

We invited Lauren Wilhite from the Color Collective back as a guest blogger to give us her unique point of view on our Fall Colors.

“Colored denim is popping up everywhere right now, and I’m loving every bit of it.  J Brand just came out with their mid-rise skinny leg jeans in jewel tone colors; they are a great fit and the colors are absolutely perfect for fall. I collaborated with graphic designer/photographer Heather Lustnauer to create this palette inspired by J Brand denim.  The Black Cherry, Riviera Blue and Aubergine colors make a stunning combination and look wonderful when paired with mustard and gray accents.”

“A Night Out with J Brand for FNO” – My Style Pill

Filed Under: Events / Fashion / Guest Bloggers / You Need This

This year for Fashion’s Night Out, J Brand designed an exclusive Super Skinny in Coated Shocking Pink style and will donate 100% of net proceeds from each sale of this J Brand for FNO style to the New York City AIDS Fund in the NY Community Trust.

We celebrated FNO that evening in New York City with the J Brand Ambassadors (who looked amazing in their FNO jean!) and visited the festivities at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, and Intermix looking amazing in their FNO style.

We invited fashion blogger Christine Cameron of My Style Pill, who also rocked this exclusive style, to join us for the evening. Read about her night below:

My Style Pill wears the J Brand for FNO exclusive style

“Last night was Fashion’s Night Out! What a whirlwind of fun, fashion and friends. I teamed up with J Brand, who just debuted their exclusive FNO jean, (which benefits the New York City Aids Fund (read more about it here) and ran around the city for the first part of the night with a gaggle of pink jean-clad models and Jeff Rudes, CEO and Founder of the brand. We started out in the Meat Packing District where we took photos in and around The Chelsea Market….

Then it was off to Saks, where we had fun running around the store snapping more pics, chatting with fans and admiring all the pink jeans that were everywhere!

Afterward, I made my way down to SoHo to attend a few different parties my friends were hosting, as well as snap even more pics and chat with fellow bloggers. It was quite a night for me and my J Brand jeans. Pretty sure I showed them a good time as I bounced up and down the island of Manhattan all night long. All in all, the evening was a grand success and I had a wonderful time. Thank you so much to J Brand for everything, and cheers to a fabulous Fashion’s Night Out! xoxo”

Stylish Summer Music Playlist

Filed Under: Guest Bloggers / Inspiration

Every summer has its own playlist, but this year, it’s filled with stylish beats! We asked writer, Ali MacLean, to share with us the bands who defined her sounds of Summer 2011!

“Ah, summer. We shed our leather jackets and hoodies, slip into our favorite faded J Brand cut offs, spray on some SPF and head to the music festivals for some R and R.

Whether it’s rest and relaxation you are looking for or rock and roll, the fairgrounds camping sites or posh hotels will provide you with both.  Of course you can catch your powerhouse bands, your Radioheads, your Muses, your Foos, but if you step away from the main stage and wander across the field a lot of amazing music is going on. Get there early. Go see the new buzz bands. You won’t be sorry.

Here are a few of the hottest emerging acts of 2011 that you simply can’t miss:

FITZ AND THE TANTRUMS

When style and music collide, one band stands out.  Los Angeles’ own soulsters Fitz and the Tantrums are a force of panache and dynamite music, blending Motown sounds and a groove party that gets any audience jumping and dancing. They are ultimate entertainers, with lead singers Michael Fitzpatrick and Noelle Scaggs trading tantrums and powerhouse vocals while they doo-wop and strut around the stage. Always dressed to the nines, accessorized and glam, it’s like a modern day Temptations with Ike and Tina Turner battling it out.

Once a local favorite, playing popular LA haunts like Bardot, Fitz has now broken through as a VH1 ‘You Oughta Know’ Artist on The Rise, making appearances on Conan and has been touring across the country playing festivals. They played Lollapalooza and will be playing the V Festival and Voodoo Festival along with many other dates.

WARPAINT

For those who prefer minimalism, there is the older sister cool of Warpaint. Once boasting ‘it’ girl actress Shannyn Sossamon as a member, these four fashionable, raven-haired beauties play hazy post-punk dream pop.

At a Warpaint show, lanky legs and model hair adorn the stage. Standing almost completely still while singing whisper-like harmonies, the girls concentrate on each other onstage like an indie rock séance. The energy of the songs build to an enormous apex and crashes with thunderous cymbals and bass lines.

Warpaint are currently working their mysterious and ethereal magic on Europe, hitting the summer festivals, including Reading and Leeds. They’ll be back in America in time for Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival and the Treasure Island Music Festival in San Francisco.

LITTLE DRAGON

Ever since Dylan plugged in, the kids have gone crazy for electronic music at summer festivals and the popularity grows every year. This season one stand out act has been Little Dragon.

Though lead singer Yukimi Nagano is a veteran in her homeland Sweden, having been a Debbie Harry type electronica icon, she collaborated with DJs and sneaker pimped her way through several acts until starting her own band.

Collaborations with the Gorillaz and TV On The Radio got them attention but it was their trippy, Prince-y, soul pop and Nagano’s sexy voice that earned them rabid fans. The winning combo bridges the gap between Massive Attack and some cool 80’s synth band that would have been on the Cocktail soundtrack while Tom Cruise was mixing some bitchin’ drinks.

So, get out there and enjoy the weather. Get those jeans dirty in the sun drenched fields of the fairgrounds and maybe discover the next new band coming up the ranks. There is always a next big thing and you could be the one to say you heard them first.”

-Ali MacLean

Ali MacLean is an award winning writer, performer and on air personality who hails from Boston. Ali attended Miami University of Ohio where she won a scholarship to the La Jolla Playhouse Conservatory to study with Tony Award winner Des McAnuff.  Upon moving to Los Angeles, she began studying improv at the acclaimed Groundlings Theatre under the tutelage of FRIENDS star Lisa Kudrow.  Ali’s acting credits include THE JIMMY KIMMEL SHOW, HBO’s MR. SHOW with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, CAN’T HARDLY WAIT, KILLER BUD, STARKWEATHER and BREAK A LEG. Her writing credits include MTV’s BUZZKILL, WEB RIOT, HEAD TRIP, BLAME GAME, KATHY GRIFFIN’S SO CALLED REALITY, BIG URBAN MYTH SHOW, and VH1’s sketch show RANDOM PLAY. Ali then went on to create the MTV series TOWN MAUL and write for a season of MTV2’s updated version of CELEBRITY DEATHMATCH.

We definitely are going to be checking out the bands on her list, even though summer is coming to an end. Luckily, we can always reminisce about summer with some headphones and our 1046 Cut-Off shorts!

Do It Yourself: Jason Wu RTW Runway Look

Filed Under: Fashion / Guest Bloggers

Blogger Geneva Vanderzeil from A Pair & A Spare turns our Haute Hue style into a runway look. Gather your supplies and let’s get to work!

DIY Jason Wu AW11 Inspired Lace Embellished Jeans

”Lace has been popping up everywhere for the coming fall/winter season, and I couldn’t help but drool over the scalloped lace embellished dresses, sweatshirts and jackets that came down the runway as part of Jason Wu’s amazing AW11 collection. What better way to get a bit of lace in your life than by doing it yourself? Never one to shy away from a challenge, I got to work adding some gorgeous black scalloped lace to my favorite J Brand style in an amazing bright lime green. Lace + chartreuse = two of my favorite AW11 trends wrapped up in one fun little DIY package!

To do this DIY you’ll need:
A pair of jeans (go for a bright color like green, orange or red)

Around 3m of black lace, scalloped along one edge. Try to pick lace with some stretch.
A needle and some black thread.
(& some re-runs of Sex and the City to watch while you do the project!)

1. Measure out enough lace to run down both sides of jeans.
2. Cut the lace to fit, leaving a little so the ends can be folded and sewed to the underside.
3. Line up the flat edge of the lace with the side seam of the jeans.
4. Pin in place.
5. Hand sew all the way around the lace, starting along the straight edge and then moving to the scalloped edge.

This is when you’ll need a supply of your favorite re-runs – it took me about 2 hours to stitch the lace. Hand stitching works best because it allows a little bit of stretch for when you put the jeans on.

6. Complete both sides.

Voila! How easy is that? The scalloped lace gives a gorgeous and on-trend look, and a friend mentioned when I was wearing them that the lace was quite flattering on the legs, um, score!”
