J Brand Style Showdown on Facebook

Wednesday we had the pleasure of attending the Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference (IFB) in New York City.  We were excited to see some of our favorite bloggers there, and meet new friends too!

We shared our Spring 2012 Ready-To-Wear collection with the bloggers and gave them the opportunity to try on pieces from our debut collection to change up their look or style a complete J Brand outfit from head to toe!  The line is chic and sophisticated with specific point of view but can also be versatile depending on an individual’s style. It was fun and inspirational for us to see how each blogger interpreted the pieces and created a look all their own.

Now it’s your turn to decide which blogger’s Ready-To-Wear look you like best in our Facebook Style Showdown.  We’ve selected our top nine looks from IFB – the blogger with the most votes will win a $1,000 gift certificate to jbrandjeans.com, and will have the chance to gift one of her readers a $300 gift certificate to jbrandjeans.com as well!

Vote Now!

Up and Coming Music Artists of 2012

At J Brand we definitely look to music to keep us going throughout the day. With so many great new artists on the rise we thought it would be fun to share some of the ones who already caught our eyes and ears with you!

Miami Horror

This Australian independent electronica band is making its way into 2012. Their hit single “Holidays” definitely uplifts the mood and makes 2012 look toward a brighter side. We love this video because it’s quirky and so easy going. We also love the main girl sporting the denim jacket. We’re excited to wear ours for 2012!

Rozzi Crane

This 19 year old is blowing us away. Her soulful voice is so soothing and she also has a fun pop side. She not only caught our attention, but celebrities like Adam Levine and Zooey Deschanel have been raving about her on Twitter. She was also the first to be signed with 222 Records, Adam Levine’s new record label. We hope to see more of her this 2012.

Lana Del Rey

Besides her gorgeous face and unique sultry voice, Lana Del Rey has captured the fashion industry…performing for the Mulberry party at the Chateau Marmont and Dior’s Spring 2012 show in Beijing. She also recently signed with NEXT model agency. 2012 is going to be big for Lana and we’re excited for her debut album release on January 21st.

The Civil Wars

This acoustic folklore duo has a distinctive sound and we love their simplicity, yet powerful voice and lyrics. We predict they will be very big this year and we’re excited to hear what they have in store for 2012.

Fun.

Fun. kicks off 2012 with a hit single. Glee has already covered their single “We Are Young” and it has been featured on multiple prime time TV shows. This song features the amazing Janelle Monae and they both sing with such passion.  Listening to them is so therapeutic. Here’s the recently released video. Hope you enjoy the song as much as we do.

We hope you enjoy the videos and the songs.
We’d love to hear from you as well about any new artists you think we should be listening to!

J Brand Factor by The Chriselle Factor

Filed Under: Guest Bloggers / Inspiration

The Chriselle Factor’s long work days are made easier with J Brand…

“As a wardrobe stylist and style director for GENLUX I am running from meeting to meeting to photo shoot to dinner appointments so it’s important that my outfit is transitional through out the day. What I love most about these coated denim jeans is that I can easily dress them up for work with a pair of booties, pair them with a sexy stiletto for my dinner appointment, and most importantly I can comfortably just  lounge around my couch in them on a cold winter day!! Lately in LA we have been going through a huge weather change and these jeans have really helped me transition into the chilly cold winter! I’m all about juxtaposing my outfits- These coated jeans have a dark & edgy vibe, so I wanted to lighten it up by pairing it with a feminine blouse + a sparkly sequins blazer! Not only do these jeans make a strong statement, but that extra coated layer will keep me warm all winter long!”

Giving the Gift of Charity

Filed Under: Behind the Scenes / Inspiration

With the holidays upon us we wanted to give thanks and give back. At J Brand, we have been working with City Year to raise money to keep kids in school, but we also wanted to devote a little time to helping others in need.

Last week, a few of us visited the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and donated our time to sorting food for distribution. Child hunger is a bigger problem then most of us may be aware of and it is happening right here in the United States too, so we encourage you to give what you can to your local food drive or pantry.

We were working so hard to get through all the food we almost forgot to take any pictures at all! Knowing that our efforts would help a family in need that same day made us want to work at a very fast pace for hours.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, here are a few opportunities that don’t require a lot of money but are a great help to those in need.

Valerie Killeen of Bleach Black

Filed Under: Fashion / Guest Bloggers / Inspiration

Giving any look an edge, yet so versatile – we love Coated styles!

We asked Valerie of Bleach Black to style our 901 in Glory with her bohemian rocker style.

“With the always-chic 70s icon Anita Pallenberg (GF of the Stones’ Brian Jones and later Keith Richards) as my muse, I’ve paired my fave leggings-meets-leather pants from J Brand, with a studded silk blouse, sky-high pony-fur clogs and a vintage hat for a modern gypsy rock vibe.”

A little about Bleach Black:

BLEACHBLACK.com, a Conversational Fashion Diary, is Kristin Reiter and Valerie Killeen’s online amalgamation of collective fashion obsessions.  Spotlighting iconic style muses, musical prodigies, DIY catastrophes / strokes-of-genius, and rarefied hot (beep) that the girls adore, BLEACHBLACK.com is a forum for evolving their Bohemian Rocker aesthetic.

At MOMA’s Diego Rivera Exhibit

Filed Under: Behind the Scenes / Inspiration

Today marked the opening of the Diego Riviera: Murals for the Museum of Modern Art exhibit in New York City’s Museum of Modern Art. Since we were already in the city for other events, including our Online Media Breakfast with Christopher Kane at Barneys, we of course could not resist making our way to opening day.

Unfortunately, we cannot take pictures inside this exhibit, but that just gives you even more of an excuse to go see it for yourself.

Diego Rivera: Murals for the Museum of Modern Art

If you are not aware of his work, Diego Rivera is one of the most recognized Mexican artists and was the second to have a retrospective in MOMA in it’s earlier years, following Matisse. Rivera was known for his large murals that blended art with political points of view in a public forum. He created a few mobile portraits which are not bound to the walls they are painted on and those are some of the works exhibited in this space.

Diego Rivera

Rivera was an important member of the Communist party from the beginning and one of the most vocal advocates. Many of his works blended his political thoughts with the struggle and triumphs of Mexico as well as some of New York City.

One of his most remembered works is one that we will never see. It was commissioned for the Rockafeller Center. The history of what happened to this work is shared in this exhibit. Including why after it’s completetion the Rockafeller’s decided this mural could not be displayed and so was destroyed.

Make sure to pick up the audio, it is free, just leave behind your ID. Don’t worry, they take good care of it.

If you have time to spare, we strongly suggest spending some time on the 5th floor. The curation is fanastic and the pieces are even more incredible. On this floor photos are allowed. So we thought we would share a few paintings you may recognize…

Van Gogh

Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh

Pablo Picasso

Harlequin by Pablo Picasso

Frida Kahlo

Fulang- Chang and I by Frida Kahlo

Fun Fact: Frida Kahlo was an established artist all her own, but she was also married to Diego Rivera, twice.

The Diego Rivera: Murals for the Museum of Modern Art exhibit is open through May 14th. This was such an amazing day, we hope you will try to make it out to this exhibit.

If this is too far from you, we hope you will visit any exhibit at a museum in your area soon!

Ray’s and Stark Bar at LACMA

Filed Under: Behind the Scenes / Inspiration

If you are planning a trip to LACMA soon or just want a fun atmosphere as you sip a glass of wine and enjoy some great cuisine we recommend Ray’s and Stark Bar. We found ourselves instantly attracted by the restaurant’s red accents and fun location. This restaurant/bar is located in the museum’s courtyard – next to the ticket booth. It’s easy to find and very conveniently located.

As we walked into the restaurant, we were already impressed by the friendly staff and the uniquely presented table setting. As soon as we sat down we were impressed by the first small detail, the guest’s personal drawer for his or her silverware.

Excited to sit down, grab a bite and enjoy some wine, we ordered a glass of Sparkling Brut, Cuvée 20, as well as a glass of Torre di Luna, Pinot Grigio. Both well suited drinks for a warmer evening. Try a red if you are there on a chilly night.

After browsing the dinner menu quietly, we ordered the Benedict Burger and a side of Macaroni & Gratin/Gruyere to share. We find it impossible to not order a Mac & Cheese plate when it is on a menu. As we waited for our food, the restaurant gave us a complimentary quick bite to open our appetite. It was healthy, small and very tasty.

As soon as we finished our bite and sipping our spirits, our beautiful burger and marconi arrived. The Benedict Burger was presented to us just the way we thought when we read it in the menu. It was not an ordinary burger. Resembling the famous breakfast dish: Eggs Benedict, there was the bun on the bottom topped with dry aged chop steak, house brioche, red onion confit, gruyere, watercrese, bearnaise, and topped with a sunny egg, accompanied with a side of fries. Delicious!

The macaroni side was presented in a hot plate that was generous enough for the both of us. It was exactly what anyone wants in a macaroni and cheese plate: cheese, cheese, cheese.

At this point, we would usually have room for dessert but found ourselves quite full and didn’t think to look at the dessert menu. But the waiter did not want us to leave without a sweet bite, so we received another complementary dish. The dessert resembled very closely to an Oreo cookie. We loved the service, the location and the food. So if you are finding it difficult to pick your next outing, perhaps you want to shake things up and head to Ray’s.

J Brand Visits City Year at Hollenbeck Middle School

City Year / J Brand

Yesterday we had the honor of joining a few City Year staff and corps members at Hollenbeck Middle School, which is only minutes from our J Brand corporate office. After walking into the wrong school, which is a high school right across the street, and having flash backs of how difficult middle and high school could be at times, we found our way over to the middle school where we were greeted by Tara, Pernell and Phillip from City Year. They took us on a small tour and showed us how City Year is always present at Hollenbeck.

City Year / J Brand
Each City Year corps member is assigned 10 students to focus on who have been identified as having a high risk of dropping out of school.  Seeing the yellow jackets the members wear around school creates a sense of security for every student because those jackets represent someone who believes in their success.

City Year / J Brand

We headed to the City Year dedicated classroom and met corps members Vanessa and Jose who explained all their activities. Ceiling stars and Saturn shaped cutouts hang with the names of each student and their goals. The mobiles act as a constant reminder of what they’re working towards everyday.

City Year / J Brand
Positive reinforcement is a huge message that City Year promotes. Every morning these students are welcomed to school with a Power Greeting – to these corps members that means cheering and dancing around. “Even if they are laughing at us, at least they are laughing.” (Makes us wish we had our own cheering squad to help us start our mornings!)
City Year / J Brand

Jose shared with us that his own goal is to always help people. His family members are immigrants, like most of the students he works with, and he knows the struggles they face and how fortunate he is to be well educated.  He has traveled to many poverty stricken areas and wants to do whatever he can to make sure kids have a fighting chance to beat their current odds.

Vanessa is studying to become a doctor. She also has family who immigrated to the United States and doesn’t take her family support for granted. She knows that if her parents made different decisions in her youth she might have found herself in similar situations as some of the students she works with.
City Year / J Brand Hearing the emotional battles many of these kids have is the most difficult part of the job. “At their age, they have seen so many things and know so much about life.” The corps members wish they could be with the students 24/7 but know that the 8-10 hours they spend together each day helps make an impact and influences a more positive outlook.

City Year / J Brand
Our visit to Hollenback gave us a big boost of inspiration. At J Brand, we’re happy to do a small part in helping raise money and spreading awareness about this program.  We welcome you to support City Year too.  Please consider purchasing one of the exclusive colors or spread the word by sharing this post!  100% of the net proceeds will be donated to keep kids in school and on track for a brighter future.
